Info on the Estria battle in Hawaii

808Urban Graffiti Workshops
The 808 Urban crew and Estria will be running 3 one-hour drawing workshops for beginner, intermediate, and advanced graffiti artists. All are welcome to participate. No one under 18 will be turned away. To encourage the competitive fire, each class will have a drawing contest. Winner will be announced during the Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle and given prizes. Workshops I-IV will have preregistration that day.

I. Graffiti 101 Beginner :: Basics
Friday, May 29th, 7:30-8:30pm
Intro to modern day graffiti, how respect works in the game, and basic lettering formations.
Teachers: Dmize, Pest3, Prime

II. Graffiti 201 Intermediate :: Style Beginnings
Saturday, 9:30-10:30am
Basics of developing your own unique lettering style from your tag or signature.
Teachers: Bogus, Dmize, Prime

III. Graffiti 301 Advanced :: Style Evolution
Saturday, 11:00-12:00 noon
Developing individual voice through competitive development of styles. Class will mostly consist of lettering battles.
Teachers: Rival, Prime, Estria

IV. Live Painting 401 :: Live Painting & Demonstrations
Friday, 3:00-7:00pm
Six spaces will be available for up to 30 youth to paint with instructors from 808 Urban. They will be painting next to some of the masters in the game. This is a rare opportunity for the youth to have access to these writers for 4 hours! Show up early to pre-register.

V. Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle
Saturday, 1:30-6:30pm
Battle participation is by invite only, but is accessible to all Undivided attendees. This is the first time in history that we have Slick, Katch and Estria together at the same event! This is also the first time a graffiti battle of this scope has happened in Hawaii! Judges will be autographing screen prints, books and other items during the battle.

12 of Hawaii's most talented artists will compete for the crown in a live one-day painting competition. First time in Hawaii!

1st Place - Winner will be flown to Oakland in October to compete in the Finals. Hotel accommodations and per diem for 5 days provided; a $2500 value!
2nd Place - $1250 cash prize
3rd Place - $750 cash prize

1. Weyland Southon, executive producer of KPFA Berkeley's Hard Knock Radio will be hosting a 2-day hip-hop film festival. Location and times are still being worked out.
2. Jason Mateo of Youth Speaks San Francisco will be running a 2.5 hr workshop on developing spoken word hip-hop theatre
3. Marc Bamuthi Joseph of the Living Word Project will be performing live (details posted as we get them)
4. Estria will be on an all-elements hip-hop panel on Saturday from 12:00-1:00pm.
5. Graffiti Battle Raffle! We will be raffling prizes throughout the entire battle. Be sure to buy tickets!

About the Festival
Undivided, A Hip Hop Movement 2009, is a two-day event put together by Generation NXT on May 29-20, 2009 at the Neil Blaisdell Exhibition Hall in Honolulu, Hawaii. It is an event for hip-hop enthusiasts of all ages and cultures in Hawaii and beyond. Its purpose is to educate our community about the Hip Hop culture and most importantly, to use Hip Hop to provide opportunities and direction for our youth. Undivided, A Hip Hop Movement 2009 will also promote this event to bring together talents of local residents as well as people from around the world. Additionally, with various sponsorships Undivided, A Hip Hop Movement 2009 will contribute scholarships and provide experiences to young deserving talented individuals.

About Estria & Samurai Graphix
Samurai Graphix is a custom screen print shop in San Leandro, CA run by Estria. Estria began spray painting in Hawai'i in 1984 and has since painted hundreds of murals. As an influential leader of San Francisco's "Golden Age" of graffiti (1980´s), he pioneered painting techniques of characters and scenes. He is one of the originators of the stencil tip, used by graffiti writers to create thin airbrush-like lines. Estria co-founded Visual Element, the EastSide Arts Alliance´s free mural workshop that develops youth into the voice of the people. www.estria.com
